The supply of aordable medicines is crucial for the overall health of U.S.
residents and managing chronic health conditions. Indian pharmaceutical
companies play a critical role in supplying aordable medicines that enhance
patient access, improve management of health conditions, and bring
savings and sustainability to the overall health system. Concerns around the
geographic consolidation of manufacturing of key starting materials and active
pharmaceutical ingredients supply chain provide further opportunity for Indian
companies to partner with the U.S in de-risking the supply chain.
This report summarizes data on the importance of
generic medicines and their role in treating chronic
health conditions and providing savings to the U.S.
healthcare system. The contributions of Indian
companies to the U.S. drug supply are detailed in terms
of prescriptions, patient access, and savings.
We also characterize the state of the supply chain of
generic medicines, including the supply of key starting
materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients used
in manufacturing processes. The current state of the
supply chain presents challenges and opportunities
that could be potentially addressed through further
partnership with Indian pharmaceutical companies.
The study was produced independently by the
IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science, drawing on
proprietary IQVIA data. Funding for this report was
provided by the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance.
