Digital transformation is poised to promote a new era
of growth in North American rail freight transport.
The adoption of advanced tracking devices—known
as telematics—has the potential to produce vast amounts
of data on railcar location, condition, and health. Applying
this data to improve the customer experience will help the

Advantages
The rail industry’s struggles to maintain service levels as
the US emerges from the pandemic have only aggravated

freight market over the past decade or so. From 2011
through 2020, rail transport’s share of that market shrank
from 51% to 37%, mainly owing to a sharp decline in coal
shipments. In that same decade, truck transport’s market
share grew from 49% to 63%. 
